Sailing Class Equipment List IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE REQUIRED FOR YOUR COMFORT, SAFETY AND TO PARTICIPATE. PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE…P.F.D. It's a life-jacket by any other name. Today there are a wide variety of choices. Some are better than others. We recommend that you buy one of your own, that fits your height and weight, and is adjusted and fitted by a professional who knows what he's doing. SNEAKERS…Canvas shoes, you know… These will be worn into the lake and may be ruined. Shoes you don't care about are as good as they need to be. Shoes must not come off in the event of an "unscheduled” capsize drill. I'd go to WALMART and buy the cheapest canvas rubber soled shoe that money can buy. SUNSCREEN…SPF 4 MILLION… It must be waterproof and have an SPF 15 or greater. You know your tolerance to the sun. Some people are allergic to "PABA" which is common in sunscreens so if you are not sure about allergies look for the "PABA-Free" variety. Also, Lip Balm is an absolute necessity. SUNGLASSES WITH NECK CORD... Get sunglasses with good UV (at least 90%) protection. Polarized models are great for reducing glare off the water. Wear a cord around neck to keep then from falling overboard. TOWEL AND DRY CHANGE OF CLOTHES… Being chilled tops being hot when it comes to miserable on the lake. The sun won't shine every day so come prepared. WATER… We will have a large water container at the club, however it is advisable to purchase a 1 liter bottle of water and freeze it. Make sure it is refilled and placed in the freezer every night. The idea is when you get thirsty, you can "swill out of your own bottle" as it thaws. Later, you may refill from the large container. This will lessen congestion around the water container and eliminate cups having to be put in the trash. ATTIRE… Swimsuits, of course, but should be worn under a light colored T-shirt. Shorts are recommended for both male & female because not everything will be done with the amount of grace that a swimsuit is designed to accommodate. Cheap parachute cloth type shorts are plenty. Denim is not recommend since it gets very HEAVY when wet. Swimming in shoes is challenging enough, don't make it worse. Hats are recommended, but if it's a favorite, be sure it is tethered to the back of your shirt with a "kap-strap." FINALLY, A GEAR BAG THAT WILL KEEP ALL THIS STUFF TOGETHER… We prefer you not burden yourself with the responsibility of a lot of expensive equipment and gear. You want the best for yourself, naturally, just remember that the only thing of value that should go in or to the lake is you. Rescuing favorite water bottles, hats, ray-bans or your best Harken sailing gloves cannot be a priority when the boat "tumps" We aren't just going sailing, we are LEARNING to sail. THE RULE IS: IF IT'S TOO PRECIOUS TO LOSE, DON'T USE IT!!! Last but not least, PUH-LEEEEZE put your name on everything. The instructors have enough to keep up with and this stuff ALL looks alike. RULES FOR CAMPERS You must wear P.F.D.‘s at all times (zipped. latched, fastened, ect.) while on the water, and while on the designated beach and dock areas. Do not interrupt instructor or other students when they are talking, there will be time for questions. Help each other with taking care of the boats. Report missing or broken parts so that the boat can be repaired if not immediately, at least by the next class. Do not pick on other students. There are no stupid questions. Nothing can be in your mouth that doesn’t grow there, while in the water, dock, or designated beach areas. This includes gum, candy, retainers, ect. No non-prescription sunglasses allowed on the water. No running or horseplay! The docks are slippery and the shoreline is rough. No “Bumper Boats”!!! Avoid collisions as much as possible. Follow your instructor’s directions and you will learn to sail. Failure to follow their “orders” means you are in trouble. No sniveling. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN RULES ARE BROKEN You will not be allowed to sail. You will have to do damage report paperwork. You could be banished to sit by the P.O.D. You could be banished for good! (expelled) WHAT HAPPENS WHEN RULES ARE FOLLOWED You may get your choice of boat. You get to have games during class. Graduation party, with awards.
